The Michigan Department of Education has selected Julie Herwick as the Region 7 2026-2027 Teacher of the Year. The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) organizes the Teacher of the Year program to honor and elevate the voices of teachers.
Julie Herwick teaches high school English. She has had a 40 year teaching career with over 25 of those years at Cassopolis Public Schools.
“Ultimately, the quality of a school district boils down to the quality of its teachers. Ms. Herwick is just one example of the many exemplary teachers serving the students of Cassopolis Public Schools.” said Dr. John Ritzler, Cassopolis Public School Superintendent. “This recognition reflects not only her talent in the classroom but the lasting impact she makes on our current students each and every day, as well as the thousands of Cassopolis students she has impacted over more than 25 years. The entire Cassopolis community is fortunate to have her as part of our Ranger family!”
The Regional Teachers of the Year were selected through a competitive application process that began with Michigan Teacher of the Year nominations from students, staff and community members from across the state. The 2026-27 honorees were selected for their dedication to the teaching profession, as evidenced by their commitment to students and their records of service in the teaching profession.
“Putting Students First means having outstanding teachers to support all learners,” said State Superintendent Glenn Maleyko. “The Regional Teachers of the Year exemplify the outstanding work done by educators throughout Michigan. Our Regional Teachers of the Year provide valuable insights to the Michigan Department of Education and State Board of Education as we make decisions about education policy to help children achieve their life dreams.”
Together, the Regional Teachers of the Year make up the Michigan Teacher Leadership Advisory Council. The council’s mission is to bring teacher voices to a wider audience, including through direct work with MDE to provide input on proposed policies and initiatives and to help share valuable information and resources with their colleagues in their respective regions.
“We are incredibly proud of Ms. Herwick for being named Regional Teacher of the Year. She represents the very best of Cassopolis Public Schools; a deep commitment to students, high expectations for learning, and a genuine care for the whole child.” said Superintendent Dr. Ritzler.
Each regional teacher of the year will be a finalist for the 2026-27 Michigan Teacher of the Year.
