A Message from the Superintendent Regarding Inclement Weather

As soon as we receive information that a storm is on the way, we begin monitoring the forecast by the National Weather Service and other meteorological sources. We want to make the safest possible decision for our students and staff.

The procedure for determining whether schools will begin on time, be delayed or closed is as follows: The district receives ongoing weather forecasts from AccuWeather, NOAA, and local forecasters.

  • If snow is forecast, the Director of Transportation begins at 3:30 AM to survey the immediate areas and drives the district into quadrants.
  • The director contacts neighboring districts and the Cass County Road Commission to share information and gather probable recommendations.
  • The forecast is continuously reviewed.
  • Before 4:30 AM, the director shares information and discusses potential recommendations with the superintendent.
  • The superintendent reviews all available information and, in collaboration with the neighboring Superintendents, makes the final decision.
  • If a delay or cancellation is to be implemented, families will receive an Alert call no later than 6 a.m. Notifications are sent to local media agencies, posted on the district website and social media.
  • In rare cases, it is possible for the district to make a decision on a school delay or closing, the evening before. When that happens, families will be notified between 9-10 p.m.

Because the Cassopolis Public School District is 138 square miles, conditions may vary in different areas of the district, even from neighborhood to neighborhood.

We understand that parents may make a different decision for their family. If parents choose to keep their children home from school, the student’s absence will be excused. At no time should anyone risk his/her safety.
